Brendan Fraser’s Teenage Sons Make a Rare Appearance For “The Whale” Premiere
Brendan Fraser had the support of his sons at the New York City premiere of “The Whale” on Nov. 29. He attended the screening with his two youngest children, 18-year-old Holden and 16-year-old Leland, whom he shares with ex-wife Afton Smith. The outing marks the teenagers’ first red carpet appearance with their famous dad, and they sure looked like chips off the old block, both resembling a young Fraser in his “George of the Jungle” days and sharing his blue eyes. While Fraser kept things classic in a navy pinstripe suit, Holden layered a suede navy jacket over a gray turtleneck, and Leland wore a patterned button-down that accented his orange hair color.
Leland and Holden are both models signed with the New York branch of Marilyn Agency, and Leland plays guitar for a rock-‘n’-roll jam band called The Alligators. Fraser and his ex-wife also share a third son, 20-year-old Griffin, who was not at the screening. Though Fraser rarely speaks about family life, the private actor recently shared how his relationship with Griffin, who is on the autism spectrum, helped him feel more connected to Charlie, the reclusive English teacher he portrays in “The Whale.”
“He’s the happiest person and is, in my life and many others’, also the manifestation of love,” he told Interview magazine of his eldest son. “Being with my kids and their mom and our family has given me such love that if ever I needed to hold something of value up to try and translate that to what was important to Charlie, I didn’t have to look far.”
“The Whale” made its initial debut in September at the Venice International Film Festival, where Fraser received a standing ovation, and will hit theaters on Dec. 9. In the Darren Aronofsky-directed A24 production, Fraser plays a teacher living with obesity and attempting to reconnect with his estranged daughter, played by “Stranger Things” star Sadie Sink. The movie marks Fraser’s triumphant return to acting following a decades-long break during which he focused on his mental health.
