If you missed the “new year, new me” phase of 2023, we’re happy to report that you’re just in time for the beauty equivalent of spring cleaning: changing up your look. That can come in the form of a new eyeliner technique or lipstick shade, but a more lasting way to shed the old and bring in the new is with a hair color refresh.
Whether you’re after a subtle tweak that requires very little maintenance or a bold transformation that is bound to turn heads, there are plenty of spring hair-color trends to choose from this year. We’re talking an updated take on “expensive brunette” (not to be confused with “expensive blond,” of course), the celebrity-approved copper shade, multidimensional highlights, and so much more.
Don’t just take our word for it. Ahead, we asked the hair industry’s top colorists to share their biggest trend predictions for spring 2023. You may want to book your salon appointment now.

Spring 2023 Hair-Color Trend: Honey Blond
If you want a classic color choice for the spring, look no further. “Honey-blond hair color is composed of a delightful spectrum of soft golden tones that feel like a spring sunset,” Kelly Lin, cofounder and hair colorist at Salon SCK in New York City, previously told POPSUGAR. The shade is warm toned and flatters all skin tones.
Spring 2023 Hair-Color Trend: Smoky Brunette
Smoky brunette is a shade of ash brown, which has cool undertones. The trend works best on someone who has a medium-brown, light-brown, or dark-blond-natural base color, and a cool skin tone.
Spring 2023 Hair-Color Trend: '90s Natural
’90s natural” is a dimensional brunette with blond highlights painted through the head. “If you want this hair-color trend, you should start by bringing your hair colorist a picture of your favorite ’90s hair-color muse,” Katie Manselle, hairstylist and owner of Culture Hair Studio in Durham, NC, previously told POPSUGAR. “If it is something like Cindy Crawford or Jennifer Anniston, your colorist will likely focus on some highlights around your face for a noticeably open look and blend the rest of your hair into your desired shade with a gloss or two.”
Spring 2023 Hair-Color Trend: Off-Black
Who says black hair has to be boring? Just look at Dua Lipa, Megan Thee Stallion, and Megan Fox – this ultradark shade is in. For spring, you can lighten up the color ever so slightly by going off-black.
“This hair color is actually the darkest shade of brown with a very cool, ashy undertone, giving the appearance of black to the untrained eye,” Tom Smith, celebrity hairstylist and international color creative director for Evo Hair, tells POPSUGAR. “This stops the shade [from] looking too harsh or draining, but retains the striking, inky appearance of the hair.”
Spring 2023 Hair-Color Trend: Expensive Blond
You’re familiar with the “expensive brunette” hair-color trend – as seen on Hailey Bieber – but what about expensive blond?
“Unlike the usual icy blonds, expensive blond is leaning toward a warmer and deeper tone,” says Sharon Dorram, master colorist at Sharon Dorram Color at Sally Hershberger. “This trend is all about taking the everyday blond we’ve seen and kicking it up a notch with strategically placed highlights and lowlights.”
Spring 2023 Hair-Color Trend: Louis Vuitton Brown
“Louis Vuitton brown” is the new “expensive brunette,” according to Smith. “Think of the color of the aged leather of a Louis Vuitton handbag – a gorgeous rich tan, not too pale, but not heavy or dark either,” he says. “This shade suits a variety of skin tones due to its medium depth.”
Spring 2023 Hair-Color Trend: Glass Hair
Liquid, glass-like hair is in and the beauty of it is: “You don’t have to drastically change your hair color to change your look,” says Guy Tang, celebrity colorist and #Mydentity brand founder. “Shiny, healthy hair is a great refresh for spring.” You can also get a clear gloss treatment next time you go to the salon to boost reflectiveness to your ends.
Spring 2023 Hair-Color Trend: Mahogany Blond
Strawberry blond is making way this season for mahogany blond. “This shade has copper and gold elements with a touch of rose that makes it extremely pretty and unusual,” says Smith. The mix of warm and cool tones in the hair makes it flattering for all skin tones, and it’s the perfect in-between shade for brunettes who want to go lighter or blonds who want to go darker without committing to a huge change.
Spring 2023 Hair-Color Trend: Blush Dimension
Pink hair is very much so in for spring. Just look at Naomi Osaka and Machine Gun Kelly’s recent transformations. But if the hot-pink version of the look is a little too bold for you, try “blush dimension.”
“I love this color for spring because it’s perfect for blonds wanting to introduce a playful color in a delicate way,” says Tang. “Ask your stylist for a dimensional pink-blush blond tone with slightly lighter ends.”
Spring 2023 Hair-Color Trend: Code Red
We’re going to see a lot of redheads this spring thanks to Netflix’s The Queen’s Gambit. “The red color is absolutely gorgeous, whether it is fierce, or even a toned-down shade closer to strawberry,” celebrity hair colorist Aura Friedman said. “It really makes the pink undertones in skin pop.” Just be careful: if you’re seeking something low-maintenance this isn’t it. Friedman explained you’ll want to see your colorist regularly to maintain the shade’s brightness. If it’s good enough for Beth Harmon, it’s good enough for us.
