We’re Ignoring Everything but These 7 Spring Hairstyle Trends From Here on Out
There’s enough stress in the world right now over Tom Hanks and toilet paper and the fact that we all need an iPhone app to remember to drink enough water in a day, so when it comes to hairstyles to wear this season, there should be zero fuss. Fortunately, the looks you can expect in the coming months are exactly as they should be: simple.
“There will be two overarching tiers of hair trends for Spring: the conservative styles and the progressive styles,” said Devin Toth, NYC-based hairstylist at Salon SCK. “There will be trends that give space for people who want a safe, subtle, less-is-more, natural hairstyling approach – ones that don’t require in-your-face drama. Then, there will be the trends for people who are feeling more free and adventurous after this ‘corona Winter’ and election season. These bold hairstyles are cool for people who are fearless of judgment and just don’t care anymore.”
Call it our favourite new DGAF – or at least, give fewer f*cks – approach to beauty that everyone deserves right now. As Michelle Cleveland, celebrity hairstylist and owner of Hair Addict Salon, put it: “Unlike the polished, glass-like looks we’ve been seeing so far this year, this season is about carefree hair – less styling products and more texture.”
Ahead, Toth and Cleveland are breaking down seven hairstyle trends worth the temporary reprieve, so you can finally start getting excited about Spring again.
Spring 2020 Hairstyle Trend: "Lived-In" Texture
Both Cleveland and Toth agree: the overall vibe for the upcoming months will be less by-the-book – and that includes lots of texture and movement. “Spring of 2020 will prove to be the season of the ‘lived-in’ look – haircuts and styles that are no longer polished,” Cleveland said. “This season, you’re going to see a throwback to the ’90s when grunge was king and the hair was textured and free.”
Spring 2020 Hairstyle Trend: Loose Tendrils
On the topic of loose, undone texture, face-framing wisps on any updo hairstyle will become a new go-to: “We’ll see lots of tendrils from the bang section with the rest of the hair in a bun,” Toth said. “Hair falling on your face is always super cool and fits with the overall vibe of the season.”
Spring 2020 Hairstyle Trend: Bright Hair Color
Whether it’s “drenched” hair color just at the roots or ends or woven throughout, Toth predicts “painted wefts of color” will be huge for Spring. “Blues, pinks, and even greens will be a trend for people who just want to have fun,” he said.
Spring 2020 Hairstyle Trend: The Shag
Like we predicted earlier this year, one of the biggest trends of the season will be the shag haircut – “except now with a modern twist,” Cleveland said. “It will be a hybrid between old and new, where unlike the more disheveled looks of the past, you will see it dressed up presented in a softer, more wearable manner.”
Still, that doesn’t necessarily mean you need to get a full-blown cut to try the trend, per se. Toth explained: “Heavy curtain bangs can make any hairstyle look like a shag. They will be wider and shorter than last season’s bangs.”
Spring 2020 Hairstyle Trend: Deep Part, Bouncy Curls
Embracing your natural texture is never a trend – in fact, it’s beautiful no matter the season – but there’s a particular way to style your curls that gives it a nice Spring refresh. “Curly hair is definitely replacing the waves from last year,” Toth said. The cutest hairstyle to try combines a perennial favorite: “the deep side part with an ear tuck, paired with full bouncy curls.”
Spring 2020 Hairstyle Trend: The Hair Flip
“The hair flip – where it’s a bob haircut or long hair in a pony – gives a cooler-than-school, ’60s retro vibe,” Toth said. And who wouldn’t want that?
Spring 2020 Hairstyle Trend: Accessories - With a Twist
Hair accessories have been huge in the last few seasons, but Toth predicts a resurgence of pearls and statement barrettes (which, we agree, will make the perfect accent to a springtime outfit).
