Get the Look: Recreate ghd’s Hair Designs Seen at the Romance Was Born AAFW Show

One of the most anticipated shows of Afterpay Australian Fashion Week was Romance Was Born. Taking place at Carriageworks in Sydney on May 31, the creative genius was evident as models strutted down the runway in designs made entirely from deadstock and vintage materials.

While the clothing was a sight to behold, the beauty looks at the Romance Was Born show was also a highlight. Models’ faces were painted with whimsical colours, with shades of pink, green and blue washed across the eyes and statement blush sitting along the cheekbones.

When it came to the hair looks, ghd and Redken partnered with leading creative artist and multi-award winning hairdresser Natalie Anne to create looks that anchored “the eclectic nature of the fabrics, and to bring a sense of grown-up simplicity to the collection”. The hair was “effortlessly undone with a finger-combed wet look cinched in at the nape into a loose chignon allowing the garments to really shine”.

Styled by Redken’s Hair Director, Richard Kavanagh, the Romance Was Born show featured over 20 beauty looks, with each inspired by the essence of sustainability and recycling. The hair was made to look tough yet elegant, raw yet sophisticated. And, it’s safe to say that this was achieved.

“This year’s hair is super natural, really paired back and undone. We are seeing a lot of natural texture and we will be using the ghd Professional Hair Dryer Diffuser more than ever” said leading creative artist Natalie Anne backstage.

Natalie Anne and Kavanagh were kind enough to spill the beans on how to recreate these creative hairstyles, so you can channel a little of the eclectic Romance Was Born energy yourself.

Look #1 The Chignon

Start with clean dry hair, apply a very generous amount of mousse until hair is thoroughly saturated, slicking everything back to get a strong 50’s inspired shape. Using a wide-tooth comb (we love the ghd detangling comb), rake the hair back off the face and pull back into a ponytail tight at the occipital (middle back of the head).

Look #2 The Low Ponytail

For this particular look, there is a hidden face tape that is pulling the sides up giving a stronger, more defined silhouette.
