This Y2K Coachella Makeup Tutorial Is Easier Than It Looks

Some would say Coachella is all about the music, but we say it’s all about the beauty and fashion — so what better time to try an expert-endorsed Coachella beauty look? I’ve been vocal about my love of NUDESTIX’s Euphoric Nudes Festival Palette ($121), so when I saw this look on co-founder Taylor Frankel’s Instagram, I hit her up for tips on recreating it.

Step-by-Step Coachella Beauty With Taylor Frankel

  1. Frankel tells me, “I create a cut crease with my Magnetic Luminous eyeshade “Rustic Grotto” — a burgundy bronze. It’s very 60-70s inspired. I love that Sharon Tate cut-crease. I just apply Rustic Grotto in a line, bringing it from my outer corner up into my crease, then softly blending it out.”

I don’t have Frankel’s steady hands so I found it easy to “map” the shape of the cut crease with an angled liner brush dipped in the shadow. Once it was mapped, I deposited some more pigment freehand before blending.

2. “I love to take our Magnetic Luminous Eye Colour in the shade Angel and pop that on my inner corner and the centre of my lid,” Frankel says.

I added “DewWap,” opalescent, semi-transparent champagne to the inner corner and waterline then patted some “Copper Foil” on to contrast with my blue eyes.

3. Frankel then moves on to ramping up the glow. “I take our Nudies Glow in the shade “Euphorix” and pop that onto the centre of my lid for a glossy eye look. I also apply  a little in the inner corner of my eye alongside the high points of my face including the upper cheekbone, and both my cupids bow on my lip and the tip of my nose.”

I’m less bronzed than Taylor Frankel so added some Drunk Elephant, D-Bronzi Anti Pollution Sunshine Drops ($54), and MCo Beauty Cheek & Lip Tint in “Rose Glow” ($16) a wet look cheek product that keeps with the glassy shine of the Euphorix highlighter.

I finish with mascara and add some Magnetic Mattes Lip Colour in “Boho” as a liner (full disclosure it was not until this tutorial that I realised this was a lipstick — can confirm it works wonderfully as a matte, cream shadow).

4. For Frankel, lips are key to this look: “Once my eye area is complete, I go in with my lip products. This is one of my favourite parts of the entire look. Lip liner is making a comeback — we’re all about those Y2K trends but making it feel modern again. I use the Magnetic Matte Lip Colour in the shade ‘Boho” which is the most beautiful soft brown. I use this as a lip liner and blend it out very minimally with a brush to give me a softer lipline, rather than a super harsh lip look. Then I go in with the Lip Glace in the shade “LaBadi”, a beautiful, iridescent gloss. I apply this all over my lip, giving me a beautiful, plum 90s/early 2000s look.”

5. Final step: Frankel says the best way to turn this neutral glam look into festival fun is with some stick-on gems. “For a festival look, I love to finish with some studs or glitter. I take little studs and apply them to the inner corner of my as well as the crease area. It’s the perfect way to take a neutral glam to a more glitter glam look.” I used little pearl studs dipped in DUO False Lash Adhesive Glue ($13).

I would call this look “Euphoria Goes to Coachella”, while I was initially intimidated by the cut crease and gems, the look was actually surprisingly easy to pull off. Mapping your shape is the most important part – once that’s nailed you’re painting by numbers. Plus, the long-wear cream shadows don’t budge once in place so you have a sweatproof, sculptural eye nailed.
