How to Incorporate Coconut Oil Into Your Beauty Routine
When it comes to multipurpose products, coconut oil falls firmly in this category. While it’s primary function is for cooking, it can also be used in a number of ways topically. In fact, this multi-use product is so versatile that it might just earn a place in your beauty cupboard — as well as your kitchen pantry.
With the ability to use it across your body as well as your hair, coconut oil contains healthy fatty acids that your skin can reap the benefits. If you’re not convinced, we’ve listed a number of ways you can incorporate coconut oil into your beauty routine. Best of all? This product is easy to get your hands on and is super affordable.
Use as a body moisturiser
Coconut oil makes a wonderfully inexpensive body moisturiser that hydrates skin. While coconut oil is comedogenic — meaning it can block pores — which can make it a little heavy for the face, it’s great for the body and is particularly perfect for nourishing your legs, arm and torso thanks to the fatty acids within the oil.
Deep condition your hair
We love a hair mask but for those times that we’re out of our favourite one, we turn to coconut oil. To try it for yourself, simply soften a few tablespoons of coconut oil and massage into your hair. Cover your hair with a shower cap and let it sit for 30 to 60 minutes then wash out with shampoo and conditioner.
Use as a makeup remover
The gentleness of coconut oil makes it a great makeup remover. Pop a little on a cotton pad and gently sweep it across your face and eyes. It’ll even remove waterproof mascara — seriously, try it yourself. Once you’re done, wash your face as normal and continue with your skincare routine.
Shave with coconut oil
For those times you’re out of shaving cream, grab your jar of coconut oil and use it instead. Simply apply a thin layer to your skin and get shaving! Remember to continually rinse your razor with water to prevent the coconut oil from building up.
Use as a breath freshener
Have you heard of oil pulling? This Ayurvedic practice originated in India and involves swishing oil around in your mouth for 15 to 20 minutes each day. While it might sound a bit odd, it’s said to kill bacteria build-up in your mouth and can achieve a similar effect to using mouthwash.
